The board size depends on the size of pieces.
You can consider that their preferable size is between 3.5 cm and 4.5 cm in diameter. I know that in some English speaking countries many players consider even buying backgammon pieces for playing draughts, because their quality and their design are a bit better, but it is a matter of taste.
