Adapting draughts to other board geometries

I have seen a few adaptations to the hexagonal board.

This is quite straight forward: pieces capture in any available direction (now 6 instead of 4) and move only forwards (2 or 3 directions depending of the hexagons' orientation), the rest of the rules being the same.

I couldn't find anything about applying this same idea to the square board (orthogonal + diagonal). Do any of you have ever played/heard of a variant like this?

But what about a draughts game adapted, in a similar fashion, to the full square board? (which would give 8 directions for capture)
