Hi everyone, I grew up in the US where we call this game checkers and it is only eight by eight and I am unfamiliar with the bigger board. Is it possible to play on an eight by eight board on this website? Thanks.
Is there English draughts a.k.a. American checkers on here?
@mossypiglet, there is a 8×8 Variant named as "Russian" and "Brazilian" Checkers. But the rules may not be the same.
@mossypiglet I know many English draughts players who picked up Brazilian, Russian and American Pool variants as supplement for mastering tactics. The hardest thing for adaptation for them would be backwards jumping, but it is relatively simple: think about checkers in these variants as "English" kings which can't go backwards, but which can jump backwards and forwards.
The compatibility between American Pool, Brazilian and Russian variants is very high, and if you master American Pool variant (which, by the way, needs a revival in USA), you can easily switch to Brazilian and Russian variants.
Here are some e-publications : http://poolcheckers.com/e-library/ .
Yet, if you're interested only in English draughts, you might join Facebook page of English Draughts Association which organizes tournaments throughout the world under different categories, including online tournaments at playok.com .
Many years ago I plaied few games in italian ckeckers which is very similar (or I think equal) with English one. It's difficult for a Russian-Brasilian variant player like me to understand the impossibility to "eat" pieces backward.
@Tactical What's beautiful in these straight jumping variants, is that a player can crown many draughtsmen (checkers) into kings. Although I'm not native to Argentinian variant, I like it more than Russian draughts, because one extra king ensures winning advantage.
It should be good if admins will add other variants, like english or italian checkers. Of course, the tactical view of these variants are very different with russian and brasilian as with international draughts
